Question by : What are some good guitar songs to play at nursing homes?
I’m a nursing student and am noticing more and more that elderly patients in nursing homes are miserable. They don’t have enough stimulation and watching T.V doesn’t count to me! I want to play some songs for them so they can sing along but I have no idea where to start other than asking them. Help me out please!

As silly as it sounds, all of the seniors at my father’s nursing home loved singing along to “You Are My Sunshine” when anyone played it on guitar or piano. Mitch Miller’s “Heart of my Heart” also had them singing along. “Do Re Mi” was also a hit, since they knew it from before “The Sound of Music.” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”, “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and anything by the Andrews Sisters seemed to evoke lots of smiles and wheelchair dancing, as well. Here are a couple video clips:

I’m not sure how well they’ll all translate to guitar, but damn you’re a great person! The world needs more nurses like you! On behalf of anyone who’s had to admit a loved one to a nursing home, thank you!

I’ve played a lot of those kinds of performances and I stick to songs they KNOW from when they were younger. If you play the right songs they WILL respond.. but they have to KNOW THE SONGS and that means songs from the 50′s and 60′s… Here is a good play list to start putting your program together with… and GOOD LUCK.. I’m 70 years old NOW and some day I may be one of those poor miserable people, sitting there in their adult diapers in their adult high chairs, clapping to the rhythm of some old song.
